Did you file your 990 return yet?

The filing deadline for tax-exempt organizations is four months and 15 days after the group’s year end. For non-profits with a calendar year end (December 31), your deadline is May 15.

Remember: For most organizations, tax-exemption is not filing exemption! (Churches are the exception.) Non-profits that fail to file a timely return for three consecutive years lose their exempt status.

If your organization can’t meet the deadline, request a three-month extension by filing Form 8868. An additional three-month extension may be available for your non-profit if you justify why the extended deadline wasn’t met.

When filing Form 990, the IRS reminds exempt organizations to exclude social security numbers or other personally identifiable information. Since much of Form 990 is publicly accessible, releasing such information could lead to identity theft. Filing Form 990 electronically minimizes the risk of inadvertently including personal information.
