Beware of IRS e-mail scam

Be sure your church staff – paid and volunteer – are aware of a new e-mail scam stating the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) tried to make a tax payment that was rejected on behalf of the e-mail recipient.

The Email redirects the recipient to a fictitious link for a report of the transaction. When this site is clicked, malicious software is downloaded and infects the victim’s computer system. By capturing keystrokes, the software obtains personal financial information from the intended computer and attempts identity theft.

Don’t click on any links, open any attachments or reply to the sender for this or any unsolicited Email from the IRS or EFTPS. If you’ve responded to this scam already, click on this IRS link for steps you can take for protection. Remember, the IRS and the Financial Management Service never communicate any payment information through e-mail.

If your church needs the advice of a CPA or help with stewardship and accounting matters, contact the OSA&C team at 904-398-4747 or visit our contact page and we’ll give you a call.
